Smitty, also known as Buddy, one of our very first residents at Moose Lodge Senior Pet Sanctuary. It is with heavy hearts that we share his passing. At 10 years old, Smitty’s journey with us came to an end, but his memory and spirit will live on forever in our hearts.

Smitty came to us from Deep South Canine Rescue, a strong and proud boy who, while officially labeled a “mixed breed,” was unmistakably a pit bull at heart. With his broad chest, watchful eyes, and deep, booming bark, he sometimes gave visitors a bit of a scare. But those who truly knew him understood the secret behind the tough exterior—Smitty was a complete mush.
He took his guard dog duties very seriously, barking loudly to announce any and all visitors. But the moment they got close enough to offer a scratch behind the ears? His tail would wag, and he’d lean into them, soaking up every bit of love he could get.
Smitty was a fighter in every sense of the word. But about six months ago, that strong body of his started to fail him. His hind legs weakened, and soon after, he became incontinent. Always a proud boy, he resisted help, refusing to let his struggles slow him down. But when he could no longer move on his own and started to lose interest in food, we knew he was telling us it was time.
Saying goodbye to Smitty was not easy, but we find comfort knowing that he is now running free over the Rainbow Bridge, reunited with Squirrel, Nicole, and all his friends from Moose Lodge. No more pain, no more struggle—just sunshine, playtime, and the endless love he so deeply deserved.
Smitty, you were our good boy. And you will always be. 💙🐾🌈
